Manning’s School

Athletics Budget - Year 2015-16

The Manning’s School Athletics Budget is developed through consultation with the coaches and committee members for each sporting discipline. Funds received from the Government of Jamaica do not support sport programmes. Some schools may, from time to time, use funds from the general allocation of government funds for school operations, to support sports programmes though it is not recommended or supported by the Government. Other schools (where canteen and tuck shop staff are paid by the government), use money generated from the tuck shops and canteens to fund sports programmes. This is partially true for Manning’s, as most of the revenue from the tuck shop and canteen is used to pay staff and for investment for said staff members’ retirement etc.

This means that schools like Manning’s will have to find innovative ways to fund sports. If these methods are not sustainable, the school runs the risk of having their sporting programmes collapse year after year.

Currently, part of the money used to fund our sporting disciplines comes from auxiliary fees (from students’ fee), a little from tuck shop/canteen and donations/contributions from Parents Teachers Association (PTA) and past students.

These current sources of revenue are not enough to cover the entire budget. Hence, the programmes are always running into difficulties; coaches are not always paid on time or any at all, and programme plans are not sustainable which makes it difficult to completely prepare our students to win some competitions.

One sustainable idea was to have a separate tuck shop for sports. That would take an estimated start-up fund of one million two hundred thousand dollars ($1.2mil). This includes retrofitting a container to house the tuck shop.

Kindly see the complete budget for more information.

Budgets for the sporting disciplines include:

  • Volleyball
  • Cricket
  • Netball
  • Football
  • Track and Field &
  • Cheerleading
